The paradox of choosing is a school project in collaboration with Iris van Velzen, Winta Ghebre and Ellen Dempster. During the project we started researching FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) among young people and how this is becoming more prevalent nowadays due to social media.
To promote our project, I created an animated poster that you see here. On the animated poster I visualized the choice stress by animating different doors that keep opening one after the other. The different doors represent the many choices you can sometimes have and the speed and stress you sometimes feel when making these choices.
This project was part of the online open day at Willem de Kooning with the theme ‘The Society of the Spectacle’. The Society of the Spectacle is a critique of contemporary consumer culture and commodity fetishism.
With the project, we also designed a magazine about FOMO. It contained our own experiences with FOMO and interviews with other people. The title of our project was embroidered in plastic on the front and we bound the magazines ourselves.
